Story

A New Cultural Gateway in Dalby The Dalby Cultural Centre (DCC) stands as a visionary project by OMA Australia, in collaboration with Anna O’Gorman Architects and Blaklash, aiming to redefine the cultural landscape of Queensland’s Western Downs. Positioned as a civic landmark, the centre integrates a library, gallery, cinema, and visitor information centre, creating a vibrant cultural ecosystem that seamlessly connects with the revitalised Thomas Jack Park. The architecture of the DCC is designed to be an extension of the park’s landscape, inviting community engagement through outdoor events, markets, and workshops. This blurring of boundaries between the built environment and its natural context fosters a dynamic interaction space, transforming the centre into a collective “living room” for Dalby. The library serves as a community anchor, expanding access to knowledge and learning through spaces dedicated to study, children’s programs, and lifelong literacy. The gallery within the centre enhances cultural access across the region, accommodating both national touring exhibitions and local artistic expressions. Its flexible spatial design allows for a diverse range of artistic programs, enriching the cultural fabric of the Western Downs. The cinema, a multifunctional venue, supports community events, symposia, and local celebrations, offering a platform for shared storytelling. The Visitor Information Centre positions Dalby as a gateway to the Western Downs, providing an engaging entry point for visitors and showcasing regional stories. Collectively, these elements position the DCC as more than just a building; it is a catalyst for regional vitality, attracting visitors and supporting local creativity, establishing a new heart for Dalby and the Western Downs.
