New Museum Extension
OMA's transformative addition to New York's cultural landscape Founded in 1977, the New Museum in New York has continually evolved, reflecting its commitment to new art and ideas. The latest chapter in its architectural journey is the OMA-designed extension, a project that promises to double the Museum's gallery space and enhance its role as a cultural hub. This seven-story addition will stand distinct yet harmoniously alongside the existing SANAA-designed building, creating a seamless interior experience. The extension will significantly improve visitor flow, featuring an atrium stairway with neighborhood views and three new elevators dedicated to gallery access. The ground level will boast an enlarged lobby, an expanded bookstore, and a new full-service restaurant, complemented by an entrance plaza for public art installations. Upper floors will house a dedicated studio for artists-in-residence, a 74-seat forum, and a new home for NEW INC, the Museum's cultural incubator. The Sky Room will double in size, maintaining its panoramic views of downtown Manhattan, while three new terraces will overlook the Bowery. The building's exterior will feature laminated glass with metal mesh, echoing the original structure while enhancing transparency.
