The New Contemporary Theatre in Łasztownia
A theatre that transforms Szczecin's industrial past into a transparent stage for the city. The New Contemporary Theatre in Łasztownia, Szczecin, designed by Obok Studio and SAAW, reimagines the traditional theatre as a space of transparency and openness. Situated on the Oder River, the design integrates the industrial heritage of Łasztownia with contemporary architectural language. The theatre's grid-like facade of blackened steel and charred wood acts as a series of theatrical wings, revealing rather than concealing the inner workings of the theatre. The structure consists of two autonomous buildings: one for the Main and Chamber Stages, and the other for the Community Stage. These buildings are strategically oriented to allow the stages to open outward, creating a summer outdoor stage. The design emphasizes the geometry of the frame, with each opening carefully composed to frame the next scene, allowing the interior to be visible from the boulevard. The theatre's integration with the city is further enhanced by its treatment of public space. The entrance plaza, with its water feature, extends the foyer into the public realm, while the landscaped area between the buildings channels pedestrian traffic towards the river. The Community Stage is a flexible space that serves local initiatives and workshops by day and transforms into a full-fledged stage by night, blurring the boundary between the theatre and the city.
