Sappada – Plodn
A transformative urban square and multifunctional pavilion
The Sappada – Plodn project, designed by ETB, aims to rejuvenate the urban landscape of Sappada by creating a new public square that seamlessly integrates with the existing church-cemetery complex. This initiative is not just about aesthetics; it is a thoughtful approach to urban planning that emphasizes accessibility and flexibility for various community activities.
Two primary interventions are proposed: the requalification of public spaces through the restoration of pedestrian paths and the construction of a multifunctional pavilion. This pavilion, envisioned as a civic loggia, is designed to accommodate a range of events, reflecting the dynamic needs of the community.
Drawing inspiration from the architectural heritage of Sappada, the design pays homage to the traditional mountain-ridge vernacular, particularly the chalet style characterized by cantilevering wooden structures. The pavilion features a metal frame adorned with wooden shingles, resting on robust stone supports. This thoughtful construction not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures durability against the elements.
A standout feature of the pavilion is its innovative canopy, which extends nearly two meters over the stage, providing shelter and enabling year-round use. The design incorporates a hidden counterweight system that allows for the canopy to be adjusted, adapting to different events and weather conditions. This flexibility fosters a vibrant public space that encourages community interaction and engagement.
The Sappada – Plodn project represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, aiming to create a multifunctional space that resonates with the cultural identity of Sappada while promoting public use and enjoyment.
