Story
A harmonious blend of modern architecture and rustic Tuscan charm Set within the serene Santa Lucia Preserve near Carmel, California, Stone Villa by Feldman Architecture is a masterful integration of modern design principles with the timeless allure of Tuscan villas. The residence is thoughtfully positioned across a 28-acre expanse, surrounded by rolling hills and expansive meadows, offering a tranquil escape that feels both expansive and intimately connected to its natural surroundings. The architectural strategy employs four distinct stone pavilions that gracefully follow the land's contours, creating a village-like ensemble rather than a singular monolithic structure. This layout includes a living pavilion, a private owner's suite, a guest suite with a pool cabana, and a detached garage, all linked by pathways, gardens, and breezeways that invite the landscape into the daily experience of the home. The material palette is dominated by thick granite walls and locally sourced St. Helena Cottage stone, which lend a sense of permanence and warmth, while reclaimed teak introduces a softer, inviting texture. Large openings in the stone facades frame breathtaking views of the valley, and deep overhangs provide necessary shade, enhancing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that the design promotes. The landscape design by Ground Studio Landscape Architecture plays a crucial role in the overall experience, with pathways weaving through drought-tolerant gardens and courtyards, restoring the natural habitat and connecting the home to the surrounding preserve. Outdoor living spaces, including a firepit and dining areas, are strategically placed to maximize views and comfort, while breezeways ensure a comfortable climate throughout the warmer months. Inside, the interiors maintain a strong connection to the exterior through large openings and a consistent material palette of stone, wood, and warm neutrals. The main pavilion's open plan seamlessly integrates living and dining areas, while the kitchen serves as a central hub for both indoor and outdoor gatherings. The owner's pavilion offers a private workspace with panoramic views, and the guest suite ensures visitors enjoy privacy and proximity to the pool area.
