Story

A Modern Hillside Retreat Embracing Nature Nestled in a small town near Barcelona, La Calma House by Ramón Esteve Estudio is a testament to the harmony between architecture and nature. Set against a backdrop of pine, oak, and olive trees, the house is a modern sanctuary that leverages its steep hillside location to create a private yet open living experience. The design challenges of the steep site were met with ingenuity, resulting in a compact structure that maximizes outdoor living space. The house is segmented into smaller sections with stepped terraces, allowing the natural slope to dictate the layout. These terraces host an infinity-edge pool, shaded barbecue areas, and gardens that seem to weave seamlessly into the forest. Concrete, wood, and weathering steel define the exterior, blending the house with its environment. The off-white concrete mirrors local stone, while wood and steel introduce warmth and texture. Each window is a deliberate frame, offering curated views of the surrounding landscape. Inside, the home transitions from the protective exterior to a warm, light-filled interior. The ground floor features an open-plan living area, with a double-height living room anchored by a central bookcase. A see-through fireplace connects the living and dining spaces, maintaining a sense of unity. Upstairs, the bedrooms are designed for privacy and light, with sliding louvered shutters that adjust to the sun's movement. These elements, combined with the surrounding trees, filter sunlight and maintain a connection to the forest.
