IEOSEO . Seogwipo
A harmonious blend of tradition and modernity on Jeju Island Situated amidst the mandarin orchards of Seogwipo, Jeju, IEOSEO by GOA Studio is a masterful exploration of spatial and material relationships. The site offers a panoramic view where Hyeongje, Gapa, and Mara Islands align along a single horizon, which serves as the conceptual foundation for the design. The architecture is articulated through three distinct volumes: Block A, a two-story structure; Block B, a single-story space; and a central open kitchen. These volumes are unified by a continuous floor plane and a shared roofline, angled to frame the surrounding landscape. The central kitchen acts as a communal anchor, drawing inspiration from the Jeongja and village community halls, mediating between the two residential wings while maintaining privacy. Constructed with a heavy timber structure, the project adheres to a principle of tectonic honesty, revealing columns and beams without unnecessary finishes. The material palette includes cedar, basalt stone, and wood, recontextualized to offer a sense of defamiliarization. Fenestration is carefully calibrated to balance privacy and openness, with Block A embracing the environment and Block B offering an introspective, cave-like experience.
