A Semi-detached House
Conversion and extension of a 1930s semi-detached house in Munich The project involves the thoughtful renovation and extension of a semi-detached house originally constructed in the 1930s, located in the Ramersdorf district of Munich. Vollert Puttlitz Richter Architekt:innen have undertaken the task of transforming both halves of this historic structure, which began with a fragmented spatial layout and a single-storey annex from the 1960s. The design strategy was to reorganize the existing spatial configuration, enhancing the functional capacity while preserving and developing the inherent qualities of the building. A significant aspect of the project was the vertical extension of the annex, adding an additional storey that seamlessly integrates with the existing floor plan. This approach avoids a mere additive extension, instead creating larger, continuous spaces that are well-lit and dissolve the original tightness of the structure. Internally, the reconfiguration required substantial structural interventions, executed discreetly except where they serve a dual purpose of spatial articulation, such as the colored column on the ground floor. Externally, the extension is characterized by a pre-weathered timber façade, with staggered joints that form a calm yet dynamic linear pattern, bridging the old and new elements of the house.
