Transforming a Federation house into a modern coastal retreat In the leafy suburb of St Kilda West, Melbourne, an 1890s Federation house has been meticulously transformed by Lucy Clemenger Architects in collaboration with Studio Stamp. The project harmoniously marries the home's historic character with a modern extension, creating a light-filled, relaxed atmosphere that resonates with its urban beachside setting. The renovation introduces a striking rear addition, characterized by a white-toned timber facade that faces Jacoby Reserve. This facade, treated with an ice white finish, imparts a coastal aesthetic that contrasts yet complements the original Federation architecture. The extension's upper level appears to float above the glazed lower floor, enhancing the home's connection to the surrounding greenery. Inside, the material palette is both warm and inviting, featuring timber, terracotta tiles, pale oak floors, and soft Carrara marble. These elements unify the old and new sections, creating a seamless flow throughout the home. The open-plan living areas, with expansive glazing and integrated sliding doors, extend effortlessly to the outdoor deck and plunge pool, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The renovation also includes playful and functional features, such as a concealed home bar in the living room and a luxurious walk-in closet in the master suite. These additions enhance the home's functionality while preserving the integrity of its historic elements.
