Seasonal Refuge in Soto de Sepúlveda
A modern sanctuary amidst the Riaza mountains
Nestled in the serene village of Soto de Sepúlveda, this architectural marvel by estudio veintidós reimagines the remnants of a dilapidated stable into a contemporary seasonal refuge. The project embraces the existing stone and rammed earth structure, transforming it into a cohesive blend of old and new.
The design centers around an expansive courtyard, once the site of a water trough, now featuring a small pool that breathes life into the space. This central void ensures ample light and air circulation, even as surrounding plots may develop in the future. The architecture is articulated through three gabled pavilions, connected by skylights, creating an open-air hallway that leads visitors from the street to the living quarters.
Each pavilion is crowned with a skylight, with the third forming a hollow tower that offers panoramic views of the landscape, echoing the nearby Romanesque church belfry. The interior and exterior spaces are harmonized through the use of local materials, with lime-coated walls preserving the historical texture while integrating modern thermal clay facades.
