Story

A luxury off-grid retreat harmonizing with its rural Australian landscape. Kavillo Studios, designed by Cameron Anderson Architects, is a testament to the seamless integration of architecture with its natural surroundings. Situated in the picturesque region of Mudgee, Australia, the project comprises a series of off-grid cabins and an events space, all crafted with a meticulous attention to materiality and environmental performance. The architecture is defined by its use of rammed earth, timber, and steel, materials chosen for their durability and connection to the local context. The cabins feature a distinctive folded roof that evokes the form of a tent, providing shelter while maintaining openness to the landscape. This roof is anchored to a rammed earth plinth, creating a grounding effect that ties the structure to the earth. Inside, the focus is on texture and craftsmanship. Owner-builder Michael Ferris has infused the interiors with sculptural elements, from handcrafted basins to bespoke light fittings, enhancing the tactile quality of the spaces. The compact design ensures efficiency, with living areas that open to the outdoors and a layout that maximizes natural light and ventilation. The addition of a small-scale events space extends the experience, offering a communal area that encourages interaction and engagement with the landscape. A central fire pit becomes the heart of the space, fostering a sense of community and connection.
