Rammed Earth House, Wiltshire
A modern homage to ancient building techniques
Nestled in the serene Wiltshire countryside, the Rammed Earth House by Tuckey Design is a testament to the harmonious blend of ancient building techniques with modern design sensibilities. Built on a former brickworks site, this innovative homestead utilizes the clay-rich soil and recycled aggregates from demolished structures to form its distinctive unstabilized rammed earth walls. This method, devoid of cement, offers a sustainable and circular approach to construction.
The house's castle-like walls anchor it to the landscape, creating enclosed gardens that are visually softened by the contrasting timber frames of Douglas fir and oak. Inside, the home features decorative niches, a spiral staircase, and rammed earth flooring in the snug, all contributing to its unique character. The 'storm terrace' offers a vantage point to appreciate the dramatic skies of the West Country.
Complementing the textural earth walls, the material palette includes cedar shingle roofing, copper drainpipes, Chicksgrove limestone sills, bag-rubbed brick, and reclaimed greenheart timber colonnades, creating a rich tapestry of textures and colors.
