Urban square featuring a red building with balconies, planters, and greenery.

A small urban square with a red building, planters, and greenery.

Story

A sensitive urban intervention breathing new life into Navarcles' historic heart. In the heart of Navarcles, Plaça Aguilar emerges as a pivotal element in the town's ongoing urban regeneration efforts. Designed by Vora in collaboration with Toni Riba, this small square is a testament to meticulous attention to detail and materiality, serving as a catalyst for the revitalization of the old town. The square is strategically positioned in front of the newly rehabilitated Ca l’Aguilar municipal facility, enhancing its presence and function within the community. The square's design is defined by two prominent planters and a fountain, which provide comfort and protection from vehicular traffic. These planters, with their agora-like configuration, offer seating and a platform for social interaction, crafted from colored, rough concrete that reveals its aggregate texture. The integration of deciduous trees and diverse plantings introduces seasonal chromatic and olfactory variations, while also contributing to the square's microclimate by offering shade in the summer and sunlight in the winter. The edges of the square maintain a visual continuity with the surrounding streets through the use of concrete pavers and granite stone border bands. The precise craftsmanship is evident in the carefully cut granite stones that resolve the skewed intersections, creating a seamless transition between different urban elements. Rainwater management is ingeniously addressed through planters that harvest and store water, ensuring the sustainability of the greenery.
