Renovation and Expansion of the Las Contiendas Funeral Home
Transforming Fragmentation into Unity The Las Contiendas Funeral Home in Valladolid has been reimagined through a comprehensive renovation and expansion, designed by Arias Garrido Arquitectos. The project aims to unify the previously fragmented structures into a cohesive architectural entity. A large metal roof stitches together the existing buildings, creating new covered interior and exterior spaces. This intervention enhances the dignity and clarity of the facility's operations. The design introduces a covered plaza at the entrance, serving as a welcoming foyer and gathering place, and ensures covered transit between the main areas. To the west, the roof extends to embrace the funeral home and crematorium, adding two new wake rooms and reorganizing the internal circulation. A longitudinal porch along the south facade enhances climatic comfort and strengthens the connection to the surrounding garden. Materially, the project employs a mixed concrete and steel structure, with metal frames and trusses for the new roofs. The envelope alternates between existing facing brick and exposed concrete, with metal sandwich panels in technical zones. Warm interior finishes, such as wood paneling, are complemented by slatted ceilings in representative areas.
