Munthof . Brussels
A masterful blend of functionality and aesthetics
The transformation of Munthof in Brussels is a testament to the innovative vision of Ecstatico. Tasked with converting a small studio into a one-bedroom apartment, the architects reimagined the space by relocating the kitchen to the living area and placing the bed in a more private setting. This thoughtful redesign not only enhances the functionality of the apartment but also creates a spacious living environment where all essential functions are cleverly concealed within a wall of cupboards.
The project embraces sustainability by recuperating and reusing as many original elements of the 50s building as possible. The concrete structure of the ceiling and columns has been exposed, adding a raw, industrial charm to the space. The radiator covers were removed, and the lower sections of the windows were replaced with transparent glazing, resulting in a stunning curtain wall that floods the apartment with natural light.
The existing wooden floor has been meticulously sanded and treated, preserving its character while enhancing its beauty. New materials, such as the ground plaster on the walls sourced from BC Materials, were carefully selected to complement the overall aesthetic of the apartment.
