Modern house on stilts with a large terrace and glass facade, surrounded by greenery.

A modern house elevated on stilts with a steep saddleback roof, featuring a large terrace and glass facade.

Story

A flood-ready home drawing on traditional lakeside architecture. In the picturesque setting of Bad Wiessee, Germany, Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten have crafted a holiday home that harmonizes with its lakeside environment. This modern retreat, inspired by the traditional fishing houses of Lake Tegernsee, stands elevated on stilts to combat the site's frequent flooding. The design pays homage to the region's architectural heritage while embracing a contemporary aesthetic. The house is predominantly constructed from local silver fir, a material choice that ensures the building's exterior will age gracefully, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The horizontal timber cladding and expansive wooden-framed windows offer unobstructed views of the lake, enhancing the home's connection to its environment. A wooden walkway encircles the structure, expanding into a lakeside terrace that serves as an outdoor living space. This thoughtful design element is sheltered by a steep saddleback roof with generous overhangs, echoing the form of traditional boathouses. Inside, the use of timber continues, creating a warm, cohesive atmosphere. Skylights and large glazed sections illuminate the central hallway, guiding visitors towards the open-plan living and dining area, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame stunning lake views. The home's layout is divided into five distinct volumes, each with its own identity, reducing the building's visual mass and enhancing its integration with the landscape.
