Kaleidoscape
A dynamic interplay of light and form in Tajimi City Kaleidoscape, a single-story residence designed by Fumi Aso Architect & Associates, is situated on a flag-shaped lot in the heart of Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. Despite the commercial designation of the area, the project responds to the underutilization of urban land due to population decline by opting for a modest footprint. The design features a main cylindrical volume intersected by a sub-volume, creating a dynamic spatial interaction reminiscent of a kaleidoscope. The residence's design prioritizes simplicity and effectiveness, balancing aesthetics with the economic constraints of post-pandemic material costs. The cylindrical structure engages with its surroundings through varying orientations and opening sizes, allowing light to dance across the white walls, transforming the interior ambiance with the changing seasons. On the south side, a deck with deep eaves provides a versatile outdoor space that accommodates seasonal activities. This veranda-like area supports the family's outdoor lifestyle, with the kitchen strategically positioned for seamless indoor-outdoor dining experiences. A freestanding wall on the north side forms a terrace, offering a shaded retreat from the intense summer sun. The house's design also considers Tajimi City's climatic challenges, known for its high summer temperatures. The single-story structure features high ceilings and a triangular roof to facilitate natural ventilation. The building's humble profile, visible from the road, contributes to a sense of community warmth and openness.
