Story

A Mid-Century Bedroom's Metamorphosis into a Luxe Indoor-Outdoor Retreat In the heart of San Jose, California, a quintessential Eichler home undergoes a subtle yet profound transformation. Architect Megan Blaine, in collaboration with homeowner and interior designer Karina Marshall, reimagines a primary bedroom to include a sophisticated ensuite that blurs the lines between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity. The original room, characterized by its mid-century built-in cabinetry and expansive window, was reconfigured to introduce a compact 42-square-foot ensuite. This transformation involved a strategic shift of the bed, creating space for a double vanity, a shower zone, and a private outdoor bathing area. The design draws inspiration from the eco-modern retreats of Bali, integrating a patio with a bathtub ensconced in privacy through fencing and lush greenery. A pivoting glass door serves as the threshold between the bedroom and the ensuite, allowing light to permeate while maintaining distinct spatial boundaries. The ensuite's narrow 43-inch width is masterfully managed through custom cabinetry and a wall-hung toilet, ensuring functionality without sacrificing elegance. A skylight introduces natural daylight, enhancing the sense of openness. The material palette is a study in subtlety, featuring a black-on-black scheme that allows fixtures to dissolve into shadow. Mahogany millwork and Brazilian Ipe slats add warmth, while matte black tiles and naval brass accents provide understated luxury. The ensuite extends into an outdoor courtyard, transforming the bathing experience into a journey from enclosed intimacy to open-air immersion.
