Story

Mid-century inspiration meets Australian outdoor living in a compact studio. In the lush setting of Byron Bay, Australia, Harley Graham Architects have crafted a compact studio that harmoniously integrates with its garden surroundings. Known as Marvell St Studio, this 645-square-foot (60sqm) structure is more than just a backyard addition; it is a testament to the potential of small-scale architecture to transform suburban spaces. The studio draws heavily from mid-century modern design principles, emphasizing clean lines and a strong connection to the outdoors. Timber cladding, crafted from Australian Tallowwood, envelops the exterior, providing a warm, natural aesthetic that complements the verdant environment. The design features large sliding glass walls that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the structure to function as an oversized pergola. Inside, the studio maintains a simple yet inviting palette. A timber ceiling extends throughout, paired with polished concrete floors that offer a cool respite during warmer months. The interior layout is efficient, featuring a small kitchenette and built-in storage that maximize the compact space without clutter. Natural light floods the interior through expansive glass walls, enhancing the sense of openness. The bedroom, though part of the open-plan design, can be discreetly screened off for privacy. The continuation of the timber ceiling down the wall behind the bed creates a seamless and textured backdrop, giving the sleeping area a distinct identity. In the en-suite bathroom, patterned tiles introduce texture, while a timber vanity adds warmth, maintaining the studio's cohesive design language. A small pool cabana with a day bed complements the studio, extending the outdoor living experience and tying the backyard together architecturally. This addition reinforces the relaxed lifestyle intrinsic to Byron Bay.
