A symphony of architecture and landscape in Formentera Nestled within the shifting topography of Formentera's Ses Clotades, this residence by Marià Castelló is a masterclass in landscape integration. The house emerges from the earth, adopting the language of its surroundings through a dialogue of opposites: addition and subtraction, ascent and descent, solidity and permeability, light and shadow. Three distinct volumes rest on a concrete podium, each serving a unique function. The taller volume, partially concealed among the pines, is eroded by courtyards that introduce light and air, creating a porous mass. The smaller volume stands compact and opaque, housing private quarters. Between them, a permeable link serves as both porch and gallery, adapting to seasonal changes. The interior layout mirrors the exterior's volumetric play. The taller body functions as an autonomous living unit, with a ground-floor social space that extends to terraces, and a master suite above that seeks intimacy amidst the treetops. The second volume contains three en-suite bedrooms, ensuring privacy through physical separation. The connecting gallery acts as the home's heart, a flexible space that shifts with the seasons. Below, a basement illuminated by courtyards defies traditional notions of subterranean spaces, offering a library, gym, and service areas, all bathed in natural light. The house's environmental strategy is a testament to sustainability, employing optimized cross ventilation, dynamic solar protection, and a photovoltaic system to achieve energy self-sufficiency. Rainwater is collected and stored in a large cistern, ensuring autonomous water supply.
