Story

Innovative design for multi-generational living on a coastal site Located in Raoping, China, Coastal Villa Residence by VALUE WORKS ARCHITECTS presents a thoughtful reimagining of rural family living. Situated in the coastal region of Chaozhou, Guangdong, this home is designed for a homeowner returning to their roots, offering a space that accommodates multiple generations while ensuring privacy and long-term comfort. The architecture responds to typical challenges of rural self-built homes such as limited daylight, poor ventilation, and overcrowding. Built on a compact 1184 square foot (110sqm) plot, the residence employs split-level planning and open social spaces to transform a narrow site into a bright, adaptable family home. The design makes the small footprint feel expansive through a split-level structure that shifts floor heights, enhancing airflow, capturing sea views, and allowing daylight to penetrate deeper into the house. The front section rises to create a transparent public zone, while the rear steps down to improve privacy and reduce visual obstruction. This staggered layout offers layered interior views and a dynamic spatial experience. The central staircase serves as the main anchor, connecting multiple pathways and reducing steep transitions for older family members. Externally, the villa combines coastal construction strategies with a minimalist material palette. Raised flooring, integrated drainage, and stainless steel elements address the humid coastal climate. The first floor acts as a community living room, blending neighborhood interaction with privacy through semi-open porches and low walls. The second floor transitions into private spaces, maximizing cross-ventilation and daylight while maintaining privacy. The third floor emphasizes open circulation, with spaces connected through the central staircase, capturing changing light and improving airflow. The fourth floor, a private family living room, offers elevated views and privacy, reinforcing the home’s flexibility for evolving family needs.
