Story

A contemporary take on Ukrainian vernacular architecture

The Under the Reed Roof Guesthouses reinterpret traditional Ukrainian Hata-Mazanka architecture through a modern lens. The project features fully transparent glass façades that dissolve into the landscape, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding environment. The oversized thatched roof, a sculptural form, defines the guesthouses' silhouette, evoking images of a traditional tall hat or an oversized mushroom.

The spatial organization revolves around a central concrete core housing the bathroom, flanked by a bedroom and living area. The living room includes a minimalist fireplace, echoing the traditional Ukrainian stove, and eschews a television to promote an informational detox. The continuous stone-carpet flooring extends indoors and outdoors, enhancing the tactile experience and connection to nature.

The interior design adheres to modern eco-minimalism principles, featuring a natural color palette and tactile surfaces. Furniture by local Ukrainian brands, such as Noom, and decor elements like black clay by Guculiya, enrich the space. A custom-made ceramic and natural fiber floor lamp adds warmth and sculptural presence.
