Garden House and Raftsmen’s House
A harmonious blend of history and modernity
The Garden House and Raftsmen’s House in Steyr is an architectural project that intricately weaves together the past and present. Originally a supply station for raftsmen, the site has been transformed into a contemporary living space while preserving its historical essence. The project involves the insertion of a new concrete structure into the ruins of an overgrown garden, creating a 'house within a house'. This innovative approach respects the historical context while providing modern amenities.
The original raftsmen's house, dating from the mid-16th century, has been meticulously restored to accommodate three apartments. The restoration process used materials with tactile qualities, such as lime plaster slaked on-site and fiber cement shingles for the roof. The discovery of floral frescoes on the south façade adds a touch of historical charm, preserved as period windows.
