Story

Layered volumes and cantilevered terraces situate this work of residential architecture on a steep Laurentian slope above Lake Xavier.

Project Overview

Nearly 5,000 design hours informed the project’s technical precision and detailing. Rather than a single large mass, layered forms, elevated terraces, and elongated rooflines temper scale and register the site’s gradient. White wood cladding and panoramic glazing provide continuity between exterior and interior, with winter conditions amplifying the home’s presence as the cladding aligns with the snow-covered landscape.

Site and Urban Context

Set in Québec’s Laurentians near the untouched shoreline of Lake Xavier, the residence occupies a steep, wooded terrain. The plan leverages elevation changes to secure framed views while reducing earthwork. Outdoor rooms are oriented to key moments in the day: a sunrise terrace adjacent to the living area and a sunset-facing cooking terrace connected to the kitchen. Comparable attention to landscape-driven planning appears in Interwoven Landscapes.

Residential Architecture and Design Concept

Inspired by the albatross, the massing employs pronounced cantilevers that read like wings in motion. Fragmented, interlocking volumes follow the slope, projecting toward lake and mountain views while softening overall bulk. Angled rooflines and sharpened geometries introduce movement from multiple vantage points; a restrained palette keeps the composition coherent.

In winter, the white wood envelope visually merges with snowfields, allowing the volumes and their voids to read as a clear diagram of solid and light. The house reveals itself gradually along the approach, heightening awareness of its sectional shifts and terraces.

Spatial Organization

Arrival is choreographed through a generous entry connected directly to a double garage and an oversized mudroom calibrated for year-round outdoor gear. From here, circulation leads to the main living spaces where full-height glazing opens to the landscape. The living room addresses the lake and a sunrise terrace; layered ceiling heights, warm wood surfaces, curved elements, and a sculptural fireplace anchor the seating area without interrupting views. The adjacent dining space is proportioned for larger gatherings, while the open plan maintains legibility between cooking, dining, and conversation zones—an approach to flexible domestic planning comparable to strategies seen in Casa Eva.

The kitchen centers on two irregular, sculptural islands, with a discrete service kitchen positioned behind for hosting. Direct access to a sunset-facing outdoor cooking terrace extends daily use and entertaining. Above, a suspended private level holds the primary suite sequence—bedroom, bathroom, office, meditation room, and walk-in closet—set among treetops with panoramic glazing. The garden level contains children’s bedrooms with integrated desks, a bunkroom/playroom with built-in beds, a media room tuned with darker finishes and layered lighting, and a wellness suite composed as a sauna–shower–cold plunge sequence connected outdoors to a hot tub and firepit. A training room links directly to the exterior.

Materials and Facade

Externally, white wood cladding and expansive glass define the envelope, with terraces and cantilevers articulating the structure’s projection over the slope. Elongated forms and crisp roof geometries emphasize directionality without adding visual weight. Internally, a consistent wood palette, integrated storage, and custom built-ins unify spaces while accommodating a detailed program. In the wellness area, frosted glass and warm timber surfaces create a more cocooned atmosphere; the media room’s darker tones and layered lighting produce a controlled, intimate setting. Approaches to indoor–outdoor continuity and material restraint find resonance with the envelope strategies in The Conservatory House.

Light, Climate, and Atmosphere

Daylight drives orientation and use. Morning sun reaches the living areas and sunrise terrace; evening light activates the kitchen and outdoor cooking terrace. Continuous glazing frames lake and forest, turning circulation into a sequence of calibrated views. Seasonal contrast is integral: in winter the white cladding aligns with snow, and interior warmth from timber surfaces and controlled lighting establishes a measured, comfortable atmosphere.
