House for Rural Habits
A mountaintop retreat in Siero, Asturias The House for Rural Habits, designed by Spolia Office, is a 148 m², three-story home perched on a mountaintop in Siero, Asturias. This residence is nestled within a landscape rich with apple trees and a traditional cider llagar, reflecting the cultural heritage of Asturian cider production. The design serves as a retreat for a sommelier, transforming a previously dark and compartmentalized interior into a space flooded with daylight and expansive views of the surrounding hills. Large windows act as frames for the picturesque landscape, turning the exterior views into living artworks. The interior is characterized by an austere palette, featuring epoxy floors and rubber surfaces, juxtaposed with restored stone walls that provide a neutral backdrop for vibrant color accents. Central to the design is a glass-block volume that emits a lantern-like glow at night, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
