Story

A Harmonious Blend of Past and Present

House CM2 is an architectural gem nestled in the historic fabric of Burgos, Spain. Originally constructed in the 1940s by the Obra Sindical del Hogar, this residence has been meticulously restored and transformed by JEREZ ARQUITECTOS to meet the demands of contemporary living while preserving its rich historical essence.

The exterior of the house remains true to its origins, maintaining the original form, colors, and layout of openings. However, the entire envelope now features a substantial layer of thermal insulation, complemented by a state-of-the-art aerothermal system and underfloor heating, ensuring exceptional energy efficiency.

Inside, the architects have skillfully integrated unique existing elements such as grapevines, a wooden staircase, and the sloping roof of the former attic. These elements are not merely preserved but are celebrated within the new design, creating a dialogue between the past and present. The old grapevines have inspired a new porch that opens onto the southern garden, while a lightweight galvanized steel structure bridges the interior and exterior, regulating light and temperature throughout the year.

A striking white glass covering envelops the original central pinewood staircase, creating a dynamic play of reflections and nuances that change with movement and climatic conditions. This innovative design blurs the boundaries between inside and out, crafting a flexible space that adapts to the needs of its occupants.

The attic floor, previously in poor condition, has been removed to allow for vertical expansion of the first-floor spaces. This intervention transforms the original stairwell into a skylight and a visual connector between different areas of the house, enhancing the sense of openness and connectivity.
