From Sky to Table . Lisbon
A transformative project in Lisbon, blending permaculture with urban community engagement. The "From Sky to Table" project by Atelier Parto reimagines Lisbon's urban landscape through the lens of permaculture. Situated between the neighborhoods of Murtas and S. João de Brito/Pote d’Água, the Aquilino Ribeiro Machado Horticultural Garden and Park serves as a pivotal community hub. This initiative, supported by the Bip-Zip program, seeks to foster a sustainable food production and distribution system. The reconfiguration of the garden's northwest top introduces diverse zones for production, meeting, training, and leisure. A bike path adorned with almond trees leads to a clearing where a vaulted greenhouse stands, housing four upfarms that align with the rhythm of its metal structure. Outside, a circular forum invites public gatherings around planting and harvesting activities. The garden's landscape is animated by a pedagogical vegetable garden and an organic lake, nestled among existing cork oaks, oaks, and eucalyptus. Fruit trees delineate the horizontal plots, while shelters and composters occupy the more secluded areas, completing the cycle of sustainability. By bridging the gap between people and food, the project encourages healthier, sustainable habits and strengthens community ties, revitalizing the neighborhood concept and promoting self-sufficiency within a shared urban space.
