Understanding Roof Pitch & Slope
Roof pitch refers to the angle or steepness of a roof. It is typically expressed in the United States as a ratio of vertical rise over a 12-inch horizontal run (e.g., 4:12). In other regions, it is commonly measured as a percentage grade or directly in angular degrees.
Our professional roof pitch calculator determines pitch ratios, roof angles in degrees, rafter lengths, and provides framing guidelines for construction carpentry.
Roof Pitch Calculations
Roof slope and pitch ratios are solved using basic trigonometry. The diagonal rafter length represents the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the vertical rise and horizontal run, and is solved using the Pythagorean theorem.
Pitch Angle (Degrees) = arctan(Rise ÷ Run) × (180 ÷ π)
Pitch Ratio = (Rise ÷ Run) × 12
1. Vertical Rise: 6.0 feet.
2. Horizontal Run: 12.0 feet.
3. Pitch Angle (Degrees): arctan(6 ÷ 12) = arctan(0.5) = 26.57°.
4. Pitch Ratio: (6 ÷ 12) × 12 = 6:12 (6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run).
5. Rafter Length: √(6² + 12²) = √(36 + 144) = √180 = 13.42 feet.
Roof Slopes and Material Requirements
The steepness of a roof directly limits what roofing materials can be installed safely to prevent leaks and wind uplift:
- Flat Roofs (Less than 2:12): Requires membrane roofing (such as TPO, EPDM, or built-up roofing) because shingles cannot drain standing water.
- Low Pitch Roofs (2:12 to 4:12): Can use asphalt shingles only if a double layer of underlayment is installed underneath.
- Standard Roofs (4:12 to 9:12): Ideal for traditional asphalt shingles, tiles, or metal roof sheets.
- Steep Roofs (9:12 and above): Provides excellent drainage and snow shedding, but requires special safety harness rigs for installation.
Rafter Layout and Overhang Considerations
When cutting rafters on site, the length calculated by the Pythagorean theorem represents the "line length" from the ridge board to the wall plate. Carpentry layout requires adding the length of the tail overhang (e.g. 1 to 2 feet) and making deductions for the thickness of the ridge board itself.
Remember to mark the seat cut (birdsmouth cut) carefully to ensure the rafter sits securely on the wall plate without compromising the joist structure.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 4:12 pitch in degrees?
A 4:12 roof pitch has an angle of approximately 18.43 degrees.
What is the difference between roof pitch and slope?
In carpentry, slope is the incline expressed as rise in inches over a 12-inch run (e.g., 4 in 12). Pitch is the ratio of the total rise to the total span (which is twice the run) of the building.
What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?
The absolute minimum pitch for asphalt shingles is 2:12, and it requires a double layer of underlayment. For standard single underlayment, a minimum pitch of 4:12 is required.
