Workshop House
A multifunctional residence in Nürnberg, combining living, working, and mechanical ingenuity.
In the heart of Nürnberg, the Workshop House stands as a testament to architectural innovation, seamlessly blending residential comfort with industrial utility. Designed by Alex Lehnerer Architekten, this unique structure serves as a home, studio, garage, and workshop, all under one roof. The upper floor is dominated by a gantry crane that traverses the expansive main room, with side rooms cleverly concealed within the gable walls. This ingenious design allows for the movement of large objects, including motorcycles, through a central opening, enhancing the building's functionality.
The construction employs a timber-hybrid structure, combining concrete columns with a wooden shell, creating a harmonious balance between strength and warmth. A standout feature is the central ventilation system, ingeniously adapted from a 400V pigsty fan, ensuring rapid air exchange and maintaining a fresh indoor environment. This innovative approach even garnered the approval of energy consultants, highlighting the project's commitment to sustainability.
