L33 Office and Housing Complex
A harmonious blend of urban living and nature
Nestled within the bustling Bonnefoy district of Toulouse, the L33 Office and Housing Complex emerges as a serene pause amidst urban density. Designed by BAST, this innovative project harmonizes living and working spaces with the natural environment, creating a unique architectural narrative. The site, characterized by its dual nature, features an urban infill gap and a lush, verdant plot dominated by a majestic hackberry tree. This juxtaposition of urban and natural elements informs the design ethos, which seeks to preserve the 'forest-like' character of the site.
The complex comprises a private residence and office spaces, unified within a single structure. The building's design is a response to its surroundings, rising to four levels along the street to align with neighboring structures, then cascading down towards the garden. This terraced approach not only maximizes light and space but also integrates suspended gardens that enhance the building's ecological footprint. The garden façade, with its expansive glazing and aluminum sliding frames, opens the interior to the lush greenery, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Constructed using a concrete post-wall/slab structural frame, the building supports the weight of deep soil on its terraces while allowing for an open façade facing the garden. Interior elements crafted from pine plywood and stainless steel add a touch of modernity, complementing the building's organic aesthetic. Rather than mimicking traditional suburban homes, the L33 complex embraces its unique context, offering a thoughtful architectural response that respects and enhances its environment.
