Story

A modern homage to traditional barn architecture

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of southern Sweden, the House on a Former Apple Orchard by Fors Arkitekter stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Situated amidst traditional farm buildings, this architectural marvel reinterprets the classic barn typology, creating a seamless dialogue with its agricultural surroundings.

The design is meticulously organized to accommodate multi-generational living, presenting a simple yet legible volume. At its heart lies a functional core, dividing shared and private spaces while establishing a clear circulation path. This central axis guides movement from enclosed areas to the expansive double-height living room, dining area, and kitchen, which serve as the home's vibrant communal hub.

Full-height openings flood the interior with natural light, forging strong visual and physical connections to the orchard and the broader landscape. The design adeptly balances openness with privacy, ensuring long-term robustness against the elements.

Material choices underscore durability, simplicity, and local tradition. The exterior, with its white rendered façades and pitched zinc roofs, echoes the construction logic of nearby agricultural structures. Timber elements, such as roof overhangs and wooden sliding doors, reinterpret traditional barn doors, providing solar shading and privacy while allowing filtered daylight to dance across the interiors.

Inside, the architecture is defined by a serene material palette that deepens the connection to nature. Concrete floors and white rendered walls create a robust framework, while bespoke ash carpentry introduces warmth and tactility. A custom pine acoustic ceiling enhances sound comfort and spatial clarity, supporting flexible social gatherings.
