House in the Courtyard
A compact transformation in Münchenstein Nestled at the foot of Münchenstein's village center, this project by Degelo Architekten reimagines a former washhouse into a self-contained guest residence. Situated in an industrial neighborhood, the building had fallen into disrepair and lay outside the current building zone. To facilitate its conversion, the structure was both structurally and energetically retrofitted. The architects retained the original volume and facade openings, integrating them into a new building envelope. The four existing openings are accentuated by protruding metal reveals, echoing the traditional moldings of the main house. Externally, the building is clad in bare steel, designed to develop a vibrant patina over time through natural rusting processes. Additionally, the facade is intended to be enveloped by wild grapevines, blending the structure seamlessly into its garden setting. Inside, the 13.5 m² space offers a guest room complete with bathroom facilities. A substantial natural stone unit organizes the interior, separating the toilet and shower. The sleeping area is cleverly positioned on a gallery, accessible via a ladder recessed into the wall, maximizing the compact space.
