House in Melgaço II
A Triangular Retreat Overlooking the Minho Valley Nestled in the rural landscape of Outeiro, near the town of Melgaço, Portugal, the House in Melgaço II by Nuno Brandão Costa is a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture with nature. The site offers breathtaking views over the Minho river valley, a feature that significantly influences the design. The house occupies a small triangular plot at the northern tip of a larger area, leading to a two-storey triangular structure. The design orients all living spaces towards the south-facing landscape, with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and bedrooms above. This orientation maximizes the panoramic views while ensuring privacy with blind party walls on the remaining sides. The roof is subtly inclined to enhance the ceiling height of the bedrooms, optimizing the view. Horizontal overhangs provide necessary shade, protecting the interior from the intense summer sun. The exterior deck mirrors the triangular form of the house, creating a seamless transition between the built environment and the natural surroundings. Inside, the use of Estremoz marble and various woods reflects a refined material palette, reminiscent of Loosian and Miesian principles, offering a timeless spatial quality.
