House Abreu Neto Renovation
A Revival of Modernist Heritage in Matosinhos In Matosinhos, Portugal, the Casa d’Abreu Neto Álvaro Siza's early architectural genius and his enduring legacy. Originally constructed between 1954 and 1956, the house is one of four iconic dwellings marking the inception of Siza's career. The recent renovation, completed in 2024, was spearheaded by Maria Manuel Neto, the granddaughter of the original clients, with a vision to preserve and adapt the house for public enjoyment. Siza's renovation approach was deeply rooted in maintaining the architectural identity of the house while reactivating it as a dynamic space for architectural tourism, guided tours, and cultural events. The house's design reflects a harmonious blend of Portuguese vernacular, Japanese influences, and the principles of modernist pioneers like Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier. Set on a multi-level plot, the house comprises a main building, garage, laundry, and garden. The interior is organized over two floors, connected by staircases, with a layout that emphasizes functional clarity and a strong connection to the exterior. The ground floor hosts the atrium, service areas, and social spaces, while the upper floor features bedrooms and a balcony that enhances the relationship with the surrounding landscape. The renovation preserved original materials such as stone, wood, and ceramic tiles, while restoring elements like wooden shutters. Siza's involvement extended to designing new furniture and a logo for the project, ensuring continuity in authorship and integrity.
