Story

This elegant NYC loft, designed by BarlisWedlick Architects, showcases the power of interior design through its use of custom oak, Venetian plaster, and vintage furnishings, creating a warm and welcoming environment for a family of five.

Project Overview

This elegant NYC loft, designed by BarlisWedlick Architects, showcases the power of interior design through its use of custom oak, Venetian plaster, and vintage furnishings, creating a warm and welcoming environment for a family of five. The renovation transformed a previously stark apartment into a space rich with texture and warmth, meeting the client's desire for a more personal and inviting home.

The original apartment featured ample space and multiple terraces, but its stark white walls and grey millwork left the interiors feeling uninspiring. The design team chose to focus on introducing richer materials and textures rather than completely rebuilding the space. Custom White Oak became a defining feature, appearing in walls, storage, shelving, and hidden elements, contributing to a warmer and more refined atmosphere.

Design Concept

The design concept centered on enhancing the loft's existing layout with materials that add depth and character. The entry sequence was reimagined to create a more defined foyer experience, featuring limestone flooring in a custom trapezoid pattern and a Ralph Pucci Oval Cumulus chandelier as a sculptural focal point. A woven tapestry by Rachel Snack of Weaver House adds warmth and texture to the space.

Spatial Organization

The spatial organization of the loft emphasizes an open-plan layout, creating a flow between the living and dining areas. Custom millwork, soft textures, and collected furniture pieces contribute to a welcoming environment. The living area includes hidden storage for over 800 vinyl records and an integrated stereo system, reflecting the family's love of music while maintaining a visually clean space.

Materials and Facade

Custom White Oak is the primary material throughout the loft, used in walls, storage, and shelving. The kitchen features a palette of White Oak and blackened steel, with cabinets painted in Blue Note by Benjamin Moore, contrasting against bright Pental Quartz Concerto countertops and handmade indigo Zellige tiles. The combination of these materials creates a dramatic yet cohesive aesthetic.

Light, Climate, and Atmosphere

The loft's design incorporates strategic lighting and material choices to enhance the atmosphere. The dining area features a dropped Venetian plaster ceiling, creating contrast and a more intimate setting. Natural light highlights the textures and softer tones used throughout the space, contributing to the overall warmth and inviting feel of the home.
