Guide to Landscaping Mulch

Mulch inhibits weed growth, regulates soil moisture, and protects plant roots from extreme temperatures.

Our professional mulch calculator determines required bulk volume in cubic meters and yards, and counts standard bag requirements for garden beds.

Recommended Mulch Depths

Standard landscape specifications call for a 2 to 3 inch (50 mm to 75 mm) mulch depth. Thicker layers can suffocate root systems and prevent water from reaching the soil, while shallower layers fail to inhibit weed growth.

Example Calculation:

1. Garden Bed Area: 50.0 m².

2. Target Mulch Depth: 75 mm (0.075m).

3. Wastage Factor: 5% (1.05 multiplier).

4. Required Volume (m³): 50.0 m² × 0.075m × 1.05 = 3.94 m³.

5. Required Volume (Yards): 3.94 m³ × 1.30795 = 5.15 yd³.

6. Number of 2 Cubic Feet (0.0566m³) Bags: 3.94 m³ ÷ 0.0566 m³ = 70 bags.

Result: A 50 m² garden bed at 75mm depth requires 3.94 cubic meters (5.15 yards) of mulch, or 70 bags of 2 cubic feet.

Agronomic Benefits of Proper Mulching

Applying organic mulch (like wood bark or cedar shreds) provides several advantages for landscaping:

  • Moisture Retention: Reduces soil water evaporation by up to 50%, lowering irrigation demands.
  • Weed Suppression: Blocks daylight from weed seeds, preventing germination.
  • Temperature Buffer: Cools plant roots in hot summer and insulates them against winter frost.
  • Soil Enrichment: Slowly decomposes to add organic nutrients back into the topsoil.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

There are 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet (CF) or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet in a single cubic yard.

When is the best time to apply mulch?

Spring is the ideal time to apply mulch, after the soil warms up and before weeds start sprouting. An autumn top-up can also help insulate roots before winter.

Does mulch attract termites?

Mulch itself does not invite termites, but thick layers retain dampness which termites enjoy. Keep mulch layers 6 inches away from building siding and wood structures.
