Two-story Building on Scheibenstrasse
A Timber-Constructed Educational Facility in Bern The two-story building on Scheibenstrasse in Bern is a thoughtful addition to the urban fabric, designed by Rykart Architekten. This structure provides space for two basic-level classes, aligning with the Lehrplan 21 curriculum, and serves as an expansion of the Breitfeld school to meet the long-term educational needs of the neighborhood. Constructed entirely in timber, the building rests above an existing underground parking garage. The spruce wood facade features closed vertical tongue-and-groove cladding, treated in a distinctive red tone, and is articulated by various panel arrangements. The corners of the covered outdoor areas are accentuated with wooden diamond lattices, integrating benches into the facade to enhance the usability of these spaces. A unique feature of the building is the external fire escape, which includes a slide, connecting the garden to the upper floor. This element ensures a quick and engaging access route for both teachers and children, reinforcing the building's commitment to functionality and playful design.
