The Waterkant . Rotterdam
A new approach to urban living on the waterfront
The Waterkant is a transformative project nestled along the Nieuwe Maas riverbank, forming part of the Feyenoord City masterplan. Designed collaboratively by EFFEKT, OMA, and LOLA, this development emerges as a beacon of innovative urban planning, striving to create a high-density neighborhood that seamlessly integrates with its architectural and social context.
Situated adjacent to a planned bridge and overlooking a future tidal park, the Waterkant is envisioned as a dynamic urban center. It promises to be a vibrant destination for both residents and visitors, enriched by its architectural diversity and social amenities. The project adeptly addresses the challenges posed by the surrounding infrastructural barriers, including railways, major roads, and a dike, by constructing a new terrain that harmonizes these varied elevations into a cohesive landscape.
This car-free, green environment introduces a public outdoor space that features a promenade designed for walking and cycling, alongside leisure areas and concealed parking. Green corridors meander through the district, linking to existing greenery and enhancing the ecological footprint of the area. The design framework is flexible, allowing for a mix of residential towers, offices, educational facilities, and an Urban Sports and Street Culture Campus, all while prioritizing high-quality public spaces and favorable living conditions.
By strategically placing taller buildings and reducing the massing of structures, the Waterkant maintains a human scale, ensuring that generous sunlight permeates the public areas. This thoughtful approach not only fosters a sense of community but also enhances the overall urban experience, making the Waterkant a model for future developments.
