A modern brick house extension with large glass doors and windows, featuring a view into a kitchen and dining area with a brick floor.

Story

A Clapham terraced house transformed with low carbon limestone brick, inspired by Majorcan villas and Utzon’s Can Lis. Stone Brick House in Clapham, South London, is a testament to the transformative power of low carbon limestone brick construction. Designed by Proctor & Shaw, this project reimagines a traditional terraced house into a spacious, light-filled home for a young family. The design draws inspiration from airy Majorcan villas and the iconic Can Lis by Jørn Utzon, achieving a purity of form through material restraint and craftsmanship. The architects lowered the garden floor to maximize ceiling height, achieving a voluminous 2.9 meters. This creates a cavernous core space, further enhanced by full-height doors and strategically placed roof lights that illuminate the limestone brick walls. The extension opens onto an intimate garden through two articulated openings: a fixed glazed window seat and a pocket sliding door with deep stone brick reveals for shading and privacy. Inside, the serene kitchen features custom oak units and ample storage, with generous roof lights and oversized timber louvres drawing in natural light. A special solid oak island with open shelving underscores the themes of light and air. The front rooms and hallway are connected by large oak sliding doors, creating visual continuity and light channels throughout the house. A new oak-lined portal steps down into the kitchen, echoing the framed views of Can Lis while integrating pantry and storage functions.
