Multipurpose Sports Centre
A contemporary extension of an Alicante sports facility, enhancing spatial integration and environmental connection. The Multipurpose Sports Centre in Alicante, designed by Estudio Úbeda Valero, is a thoughtful extension of an existing sports facility. The project occupies the second of the existing squash courts, completing the H-shaped geometry defined by the original concrete walls. This architectural intervention not only respects but enhances the pre-existing structure, using the same concrete material to ensure continuity and preserve the building's memory. A new main entrance and a central atrium are introduced, organizing the flow of arrival and circulation while connecting old and new spaces. This atrium, a pivotal element, provides ample natural lighting and ventilation, creating a tempered atmosphere that improves orientation and accessibility. The design opens the new spaces towards the distant landscape of the Alicante huerta, establishing a visual connection with the surroundings. The south façade acts as a deep envelope, filtering direct solar radiation and creating a porch at ground level and a terrace on the first floor. These elements extend the interior spaces outward, reinforcing the relationship with the environment and landscape. The project redefines the character of the complex, transforming a previously fragmented ensemble into an integrative and contemporary architecture connected to its context.
