Mixed building: offices and laboratories . Zurich
A pioneering mixed-use facility in Zurich, merging office and laboratory spaces.
Located within the confines of a former aerodrome, this innovative project is set to transform the area into a vibrant campus dedicated to research in bio-technologies, aeronautics, and robotics. The design features a unique typology of mixed workspaces, effectively connecting two traditionally distinct buildings: an office block and a laboratory block designed to accommodate life-scale experiments and large robots.
The office building is characterized by its homogeneous design, featuring flexible platforms that can be easily partitioned to adapt to various needs. Its concrete structure is not only economical but also provides excellent thermal inertia, ensuring a comfortable working environment.
In contrast, the laboratory block boasts a mixed wood and steel structure, offering large, alternating indoor spaces complemented by outdoor terraces and work areas. This unusual combination of building types facilitates a new kind of workspace, where contrasting interior characteristics foster a form of flexibility that arises from the proximity of previously separate activities, rather than a generic free layout.
