Hauptpost . Basel
Revitalizing Basel's Historic Post Office The Hauptpost Basel project by Herzog & de Meuron is a transformative intervention in the heart of Basel, Switzerland. This ambitious undertaking involves the careful restoration and modernization of the old Main Post Office, a building with origins dating back to the 14th century. The project aims to peel back layers of history by meticulously deconstructing later additions and alterations, thereby restoring the original spatial flow of the structure. A key focus of the design is the integration of the large, historic counter hall into the surrounding urban space. This is achieved by opening up the ground floor area and transforming the formerly private passageway between Gerbergasse and Freie Strasse into a welcoming pedestrian thoroughfare. This passageway provides access to a central, roofed patio, which acts as a vital link between the passage and the counter hall, echoing the original inner courtyard. The project also includes the development of the upper floors as commercial and office spaces, while a new rooftop offers panoramic views of Basel's old town. The design respects the building's historical significance while introducing modern amenities and public spaces that enhance its role within the urban fabric.
