DRZ | an industrial building rehabilitated . Carabanchel
A transformative rehabilitation of an industrial building in Carabanchel
The DRZ project represents a remarkable transformation of a former car wash into a versatile architectural space that transcends traditional residential boundaries. This rehabilitation in Carabanchel not only redefines the concept of home but also integrates domestic functions with public uses, creating a vibrant hub for artistic workshops, offices, and community events.
This architectural endeavor serves as a case study, examining the interplay between physical and social contexts. It highlights the importance of understanding the surrounding productive fabric and the need for a seamless incorporation of new elements into the existing urban landscape. The design draws inspiration from the iconic New York lofts of the 60s and 70s, characterized by open spaces and a playful arrangement of objects that challenge conventional notions of order and functionality.
The building's façade is a dynamic element, featuring a metal enclosure that can open and fold, establishing a connection with the street while maintaining a degree of privacy. This ephemeral façade allows for varying degrees of light and interaction with the exterior, creating a dialogue between the interior and the urban environment.
Inside, the layout is fluid, with ambiguous boundaries that invite exploration and adaptation. A central patio adorned with classic windows and shutters regulates the intimacy of private spaces, while a series of false porticos cleverly conceal installations and construction irregularities, enhancing the spatial experience.
Ultimately, the DRZ project embodies a new architectural archetype, inviting us to rethink contemporary living, urban interaction, and the social fabric of our cities.
