A bold architectural dialogue between past and present In the heart of the West Lavington and Littleton Panell Conservation Area, YARD Architects have masterfully transformed a large Victorian brick house. The project introduces a contemporary rear extension that not only respects but enhances the historical character of the original structure. The clients' desire for a modern living space that embraces the vineyard and valley views has been realized through a design that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor environments. The extension's exterior is clad in black zinc, providing a sharp contrast to the warm brick of the existing house. This material choice, combined with the sculptural roof forms, creates a dynamic visual impact. The angular roofs reinterpret the traditional pitched forms of the Victorian house, establishing a cohesive yet distinct architectural identity. Inside, the extension features an open-plan layout where large folding doors dissolve the boundary between the interior and the outdoor deck, inviting the countryside into everyday life. The exposed roof structures define distinct zones within the space, such as the intimate dining area and the expansive living room, which centers around a suspended fireplace. The project also involved the refurbishment of the original house, allowing it to accommodate bed and breakfast spaces while preserving its historical essence. This harmonious integration of old and new exemplifies how contemporary architecture can complement traditional structures.
