Atelier Kvium | stable Transformation into artist studio
A harmonious blend of history and modernity for artistic expression.
Atelier Kvium represents a thoughtful transformation of a former stable into a vibrant artist studio, meticulously designed to cater to the needs of a dedicated painter. Central to this design is the careful orchestration of daylight, which illuminates every brushstroke and pigment, enhancing the artist's creative process.
The spacious main room is drenched in natural light, thanks to strategically placed skylights that offer expansive views of the sky above. Complementing this, specially designed LED light strips are integrated into the ceiling, providing a diffuse light that mimics daylight quality, ensuring that the artist can work effectively even on darker days.
The studio is an exploration of spatial dynamics, featuring a grand main area with soaring ceilings, contrasted by two large wooden boxes clad in pine at each end. These boxes serve multiple functions, including storage for canvases, a rough workshop, and office spaces, while also providing access to a roof terrace and a footbridge connecting to adjacent studio rooms. This design not only supports the artist's craft but also creates immersive pockets of creativity.
In the main studio area, two functional painting walls, measuring 22 x 5.5 meters, can be slid aside to reveal a breathtaking view of the meadow outside, enhancing the connection between the artist and the natural landscape.
The building's exterior pays homage to its historical roots, with gently renovated fieldstone walls and preserved stable window placements. New windows in a historical style and red-painted wood cladding replicate the original aesthetics, while the large saddle roof mirrors the former tin roof.
The north gable of the building serves as a testament to its purpose as a 'daylight machine,' featuring a large window section that allows light to flood in while providing views of the surrounding landscape. This gable also integrates glass sections and a gate for easy access to transport large artworks.
The transformation of this stable into an artist's studio has been executed with profound respect for its history, merging the preservation-worthy facade with a modern, light-filled interior that fosters artistic expression.
