Story

EMT Museum

A transformative urban intervention connecting city and landscape.

The EMT Museum in Madrid stands as a pivotal urban intervention on the former Vicente Calderón Stadium site, bridging the Pirámides neighborhood and the Manzanares River. As an extension of the Madrid Río regeneration, the museum serves as a hinge between the urban environment and the natural landscape. Its clear geometry respects existing urban alignments, while a translucent envelope blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.

Designed as a new emblem for the EMT, the architecture reinterprets industrial typologies through a contemporary lens, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and identity. The museum is conceived as a dynamic institution reflecting the evolution of Madrid’s public transport system, with flexible circulation and distinct public and service flows enhancing both visitor experience and operational efficiency.

The museum's design features large, column-free exhibition spaces, utilizing a reinforced-concrete bridge system combined with a lightweight metal and ETFE envelope. The ground floor is a versatile platform for exhibitions, workshops, and public events, reinforcing its role as a civic and cultural hub. Environmental considerations are integral, with the ETFE façade acting as a passive climatic system, optimizing light and energy efficiency.
