As Seen Below—The Dome, a Skyspace

A monumental Skyspace inviting introspection

On June 19, 2026, ARoS Aarhus Art Museum will unveil As Seen Below – The Dome, a remarkable Skyspace designed by renowned artist James Turrell. This installation represents Turrell's largest Skyspace within a museum context, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with both the sky and their inner selves. The dome-shaped structure, with a height of 16 meters and a diameter of 40 meters, embodies a significant completion of ARoS's historical vision, The Next Level.

Accessed through a subterranean corridor filled with light, visitors will enter a vast domed hall where Turrell's meticulously calibrated lighting envelops the space in a spectrum of colors. This carefully designed environment encourages guests to pause, reflect, and witness the interplay of light and color on their senses. The experience is particularly profound at sunrise and sunset, when the dome transforms through timed light sessions that harmonize with the natural rhythms of the day and the changing seasons.

As visitors immerse themselves in As Seen Below, they embark on a meditative journey, where the boundaries between natural and artificial light blur, reshaping their perception of time and place. Each light session aspires to become a sensory ritual, merging nature and art, and turning the first and last light of the day into a masterpiece of its own.
