63 housing units for the Bastide-Niel urban development
A transformative urban housing project in Bordeaux
The Garonne River divides Bordeaux’s urban fabric, with the right bank historically lagging in development. The Bastide-Niel urban development aims to bridge this divide by creating new centers and increasing density in the area. This ambitious project seeks to provide optimal, comfortable, and durable living spaces while enhancing the existing industrial heritage, thereby preserving the identity of the neighborhood.
Architects OLGGA and Atelier Cambium have crafted a symbiosis between the existing walls and new structures, resembling a Russian doll in architectural form. The development comprises six distinct blocks, each designed with multiple sloped roofs, fostering a sense of community through thoughtful layout and landscaping. The housing units feature generous volumes, expansive views, and large open terraces, all inspired by the mineral imprint of pre-existing buildings.
The facade showcases chamfered sections clad in stone-tinted ceramic and colored stone-tinted concrete, while smooth grey concrete represents the vestiges of the former structures. This design not only respects the historical context but also enhances the overall aesthetic of the new neighborhood.
