Innovative architecture meets oceanic research

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel has undergone a remarkable expansion, seamlessly blending modern architecture with its natural surroundings on the Schwentine Estuary. The new building, designed by Staab Architekten, features a robust Corten steel base that echoes the architectural lines of the existing structure while harmonizing with the surrounding brick buildings. This thoughtful integration not only respects the historical context but also enhances the functionality of the research facility.

The base of the expansion serves as a versatile space, housing storage for expedition equipment and laboratories, divided by inviting patios that foster collaboration and interaction among researchers. Above this solid foundation rise five distinct cubes, each representing different research areas. These cubes are clad in prismatic, reflective glass and aluminum, creating a dynamic interplay of light and form that captures the maritime essence of the location.

A standout feature of the design is the cube dedicated to public access, which includes a library and conference room, also finished in Corten steel. This thoughtful inclusion invites the community into the world of ocean research, bridging the gap between academia and the public. Informal common areas and conference rooms along the corridors provide stunning views of the water and the institute's research vessels, promoting daily interactions and a collaborative spirit among the researchers.
