detached house . Aarau
A harmonious blend of modern architecture and nature
Nestled on an elevated site at the edge of Aarau's residential area, this detached house designed by GAUTSCHI LENZIN SCHENKER is a testament to contemporary architecture that respects its natural surroundings. The building, positioned parallel to the street, offers expansive views of the adjacent agricultural zone and the Jura mountain range, creating a serene living environment.
The structure is thoughtfully integrated into the existing settlement, with a hillside-embedded plinth level that accommodates essential amenities such as a garage, a multifunctional room, and a striking double-height entrance hall. This dynamic introduction leads to a straight staircase that connects to the upper floor, where communal areas and private spaces harmonize beautifully.
The upper level features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a sauna, with a loggia extending from the children's bedrooms. The generous living and dining area, complete with a kitchen and fireplace, is designed for both comfort and functionality. A ceiling offset creates a double-height dining space, subtly zoning the open-plan area while enhancing the sense of space.
Accessed via a semi-spiral staircase, the attic floor houses an office with large glazing that frames views of Aarau. The outdoor spaces are rich and varied, with terraces on both sides allowing residents to enjoy the picturesque landscape.
The architectural language of the building is characterized by its horizontal articulation. An exposed concrete plinth serves as a robust base, while the upper floors are clad in untreated red cedar, creating a striking contrast. Inside, the use of mineral materials and wood fosters a warm and inviting atmosphere, with sandblasted concrete, clay-plastered walls, and limestone flooring complemented by elm built-ins and solid wood floors throughout.
